Giant's Causeway

Culturalmente Imparando

The Giant's Causeway is a rocky conformation found on the north east coast of Northern Ireland, near the town of Bushmills in County Antrim.

Since 1986 this outcrop has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage List and attracts curious visitors from all over the world every year.

But let's see what it is: the Giant's Causeway is made up of about 40 thousand basalt columns with a perfect hexagonal shape. Their origin is volcanic and dates back to about 50 million years ago, that is when the North American and European setting broke away, creating a breakdown of the earth's land which caused an eruption of melted basalt which, a contact with the atmosphere and subject to the continuous erosion of water, solidifies creating a compact lava plateau.

Both the hexagonal shape is the most frequent to find, there is no lack of rocks with 4, 5, 7 or even 8 sides. The height of the pillars can reach 28 meters above sea level and the entire conformation is only partially visible to the naked eye, since it also continues on the seabed.

But as often happens in the face of certain wonders of nature, science is not communication capable of collecting the origins of the Giant's Causeway. In fact, fascinating legends intertwine with this, which often (as in this case) give the attraction its name. One of these legends, as well as the most famous, concerns the note of a giant named Fionn macCumhaill, who constituted the pavement to reach Scotland and fight his rival, the giant Angus. But there are several versions of the legend, such as the construction of the pavement to reach the beloved in Scotland. In all cases, the pavement is destroyed and sinks into the ocean, only its remains are on the shores of the two countries. Even in Scotland, in fact, particularly on the island of Staffa, there are the exact same basaltic conformations.
