The Dongsangnye is a weird custom, which comes from South Korea, and it is celebrated during the wedding day.
The origins of Dongsangnye are unknown but its meaning is well known: this tradition should be used to instill in the groom’s soul all those fundamental values that will be useful for the rest of his conjugal life.
But what is it?
The Dongsangnye provides for the immobilization of the groom, to whom are removed shoes, socks and his ankles are strung together with a rope. After this first stage, all the male guests take turn whipping the groom’s feet with a fish, a corb. This fish, in fact, is synonymous with intelligence and strength and through the lashes, symbol of encouragement to fulfil his conjugal duties during the first wedding night, these values should join man's life.
