On 16 May 1975, at the age of 35, Japanese alpinist Junko Tabei reached the top of Mount Everest, becoming the first woman to climb the "Seven Peaks". In 1970, Yomiyuri Shimbun and Nihon Television decided to organise an all-female expedition, thus creating the “Japanese Women’s Everest Expedition”. Junko, already a mother at that time, was one of the fifteen to leave. In 1969-70, she also conquered the alpine peaks. A few months before her death, she led on Mount Fuji a group of young people displaced after the disaster at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant.
