On May 16, 1975, at the age of 35, Junko Tabei, a Japanese mountaineer, reached the summit of Mount Everest, becoming the first woman to complete the ascent of the "Seven Summits". The Yomiyuri Shimbun and the Nihon Television decided in fact in 1970 to organize an all-female expedition, giving life to the "Japanese Women's Everest Expedition".
