The Castell, which means “castle” in Catalan, is a human tower that is built by special associations called "colles castelleres". The origins of this practice go back to the Ball dels Valencians before XV century, which closed religious processions through the construction of the aforementioned towers of three or four floors. These evolved after a period of decadence dated between 1908 and 1931, even interrupting for a few years. Their construction follows precise rules and is a ritual handed down from year to year, from father to son. If you want to attend these performances you have to go to Spain from June to November, the period in which the castelleres actors come alive.
